Who the fuck is Kid Legit?

...I don't know either, but it seems as if he popped into the blogosphere overnight and has made quite the impression. Over the past couple days, he has had a few of his songs in the top 20 most popular cuts on HypeM.

Kid Legit ( http://www.myspace.com/legitproductions ) is a 21 year old DJ/Producer from Montreal that broke out onto the nightlife scene about year ago with the launch of his clothing line, Brinada Clothing ( http://www.brinada.com ). He holds current residencies on Fridays at Blue Dog Motel (a bar owned by the Team Canada DJ's), and Thursdays Tokyo Bar ; and has spun along with the likes of Steve Aoki, LAZRtag, Cobra Krames, Hatchmatik, and Hot Pink Delorean.

Javelin, from Providence, Rhode Island is mainly a hip-hop artist, but ‘Soda Popinski‘ dives into chiptune territory. It’s very tinny and plastic to begin, but it quickly builds into an in-depth and very danceable chiptune, with song bangin’ beats. The only downside to this awesome, awesome song is the length. It’s short. :( Still, give it a listen! It’s a great tune and very catchy!

So, I have been digging on Mr. Oizo since he dropped "When Analog Worms Attack," and he continues to bring the heat.

Mr. Oizo (pronounced Mister Wah-zoh) is the pseudonym of French music producer Quentin Dupieux.

Dupieux is most famous for his electro track 'Flat Beat', which became a hit all across Europe in 1999 as it was featured in a series of Levi's jeans TV commercials. Dupieux also directed the ad, which featured a yellow puppet named Flat Eric nodding his head to the sound of the track while riding in a pickup truck. Flat Eric later appeared in the music video for "Flat Beat". After "Flat Beat", Oizo released his first album in 1999, Analog Worms Attack, featuring a single of the same name. In 2005, Oizo released his second album entitled Moustache (Half a Scissor). In 2006 and 2007, Oizo produced remixes for Kavinsky, Jamelia, Cassius, Scissor Sisters and, most recently, Calvin Harris.

So, I was trolling through the blog world and stumbled across a post that had me laughing. I'm glad I wasn't the only one thinking this. The good people at Philebrity posted their thoughts, and I couldn't agree more; matter of fact, here is the post:

Diplo Remix Proves The Ineffable, Unquestionable Suckiness Of That MGMT Band
We have been silent on this topic for far too long: That band MGMT annoys the living hell out of us. Why? Hard to say. Too Hot Topic, maybe. Too BlogRockBuster, perhaps — our age’s equivalent of the Blockbuster approach to music, like Boston in the 1970s, if Boston actually sucked and did not, as it turned out, rule. So yeah, we winced when we copped the mp3 of Diplo’s remix of the MGMT hit single, “Time To Pretend.” Which is arguably the only MGMT song we’ve ever heard that is worth a damn. And it’s here that we must give Diplodicus a kind of backhanded compliment: While it is usually the remixer’s job to take a single, boil it down to its basic ingredients and then rebuild — thereby proving the track’s unquestionable hook-i-ness — in this case, Diplo’s services reveal that, when boiled down, MGMT remixes prove the unquestionable suckiness of everything this band touches. And, so we are understood, this is not about Diplo’s remixing talents, which are well-established and totally bangin’. Riva Starr (or Riva $) also be recognizable as Technoey breaks producer Madox has really impressed me recently with his transition over to something more clubby. His upfront driving techno style, tight production skills but also his ability to mix it up is always refreshing. Alot of his remixes are kinda minimalistic electro, but have enough substance to keep you going - It seems a logical way for Riva to go, and works well.

Here, Riva spices up the age old classic 'Sound of Da Police' by KRS One, which has been heard in partys all across the planet for what seems like an eternity. Its a cut-back techno beat with a thudding, rolling tempo. It also cuts and loops 'wooop wooop', which is probably a good thing.

Birdy Nam Nam is a DJ crew from France whose members are Crazy-B, DJ Pone, DJ Need, and Little Mike. Birdy Nam Nam have won several prizes throughout their career including the DMC Technics 2002 World TEAM Championships. Birdy Nam Nam's goal is to use the turntable player as an actual musical instrument. Their self-titled debut album was released in 2006 on Uncivilized World Records, and in March of that year, they performed at the internationally-renowned music conference SXSW. The group's name is taken from a line in the 1968 Peter Sellers film The Party, directed by Blake Edwards[1].

They gain their music from friends, owned albums, and press beats and patterns into vinyl to assemble their music live.

I have stumbled across pretty much one of the greatest posts throughout all the blogs Ive been too... I praise these people because they input many hours a week to bring you (the reader) the best and newest in Music, may it be Indie, Jazz, Soul, Alt. Rock, or Polka, there is a blog for you. A Musicbloggers/audiobloggers/MP3bloggers/Etc is NOT a person who advocates or takes part of musical piracy advances. They provide an MP3 file free of charge to promote an artist they like, and more often than not, they take the file off when asked to. Being a huge fan of MP3 Blogs, Pretty Much Amazing presents what I think is the most up-to-date resource of MP3 Blogs out there. Ratatat and...Justice

Ratatat are something special. There's so much around that sounds the same, and when someone breaks the mold its like being rinsed in fresh lemon juice. They have this fantastic warped synth sound permeated by metallic guitar strumming and soft keyboard blobbing. Its mainly electro stuff and a cheeky bit hip hopity at times perhaps.

There's also a reasonable mash-up of Justice's We Are Your Friends and Ratatat's Seventeen Years kicking up a fuss over at Hype Machine. Its fairly tight but I'm not sure it adds anything major to either song or creates anything worth writing home about. Don't let it put you off Ratatat themselves though. Just listen to Mirando and the original Seventeen Years and you'll see what I mean.

Ableton+Serato=Live² (or 2 Live Crew)

So I suppose that it is time for me to start posting... I stumbled across a bit of information, possibly old news, but who cares.

Just as the DJ world created embarrassing damp patches with the aforementioned Traktor evolution, two behemoths of the DJ scene have confirmed speculation that something was afoot. As sure as death and taxes, Serato have announced that they're hanging out with Ableton - just one day after day that NI made their own huge announcement. Everybody sing along... "Ableton and Serato sitting in a tree..."

Here's the official verbiage. It doesn't say very much so don't be asking how much, when or if you can upgrade from either respective Live package because nobody knows:

Serato and Ableton are happy to announce a partnership, which will pave the way for the future of Digital DJing. With shared artist rosters from hip-hop (DJ Jazzy Jeff, DJ Nu-Mark, A-Trak) to electronica (Paul Van Dyk, DJ Sasha), both Ableton Live and Serato Scratch Live are renowned as the premier performance platforms in clubs around the globe.

While Serato’s Scratch Live excels in vinyl emulation, music library control and lightning quick hands-on scratching, Ableton Live provides the tools for production, on-the-ﬂy remixing and beat creation.

“Ableton and Serato take different approaches to modern musical performance,” says Ableton CEO Gerhard Behles, “But both companies live by the philosophy that software should be straightforward, easy to use, and most importantly, reliable and stable onstage and in the studio. Ableton has never had an answer for the DJ who wants vinyl control, and rather than try to emulate what Serato do so well, we simply make sure that our products work well together.”

Serato Audio Research CEO Steve West agrees. “After years of talking together, we’re thrilled to be working with Ableton. It’s exciting to think about what we can offer to DJs and producers: the ability to go beyond just spinning records and add a personal stamp to the music they play.”

Just where this Serato and Ableton collaboration will take us has yet to be seen but one thing is clear: the worlds of DJing, remixing and production for artists worldwide have changes ahead.

While it's generally acknowledged that SSL owns the DVS market, they've been left behind a tad with Traktor and its evolving Scratch product and most definitely in th ewake of yesterday's Traktor Pro announcement. And while every MIDI controller aims to work primarily with Traktor rather than SSL, it also has the edge in other areas like effects. Now it would be easy stomp around Auckland wishing you could do all the things Traktor does, but putting that into practice isn't so simple. So what if you hooked up with the guys who are doing all that stuff and then some and owning that end of the scene?

So from one side, we've got Ableton Live's dominance in the production market and the other is Scratch Live's dominance of the DVS market. So in the middle should be the one true DJ app to rule them all. In theory anyway. Time will tell if it's an all new app or simply making the products work seamlessly.

More info is due from both companies in the next few days. But you can be sure that I'll be giving chinese burns, wedgies and nipple tweaks to the Serato guys at BPM until they fess up more info.

But I'd be keeping an eye out for something at NAMM.
